Rangers shrug off slow start, down Montreal, 5-2 Rangers win 53rd, stay five points clear atop Metro - Update to follow

In New York, Artemi Panarin continued his hot hand with a goal and four points on Sunday night to lad the Rangers to a 5-2 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens.

The win was the 53rd of the campaign for New York, tying a franchise record.

The Rangers improved to 53-21-4.

Igor Shesterkin made 26 saves in the win.

It was far from easy on in this one.

Cole Caufield put the Habs up, 1-0 with 30 seconds left in the opening stanza. He scored off a rebound off the backboards to the right side for a tip in .

The Rangers got their offense rolling in the middle frame.

Mika Zibanejad, who hit for a double in the win, potted his first on the power play at 12:31 of the middle frame to tie the game, 1-1, he scored off a nifty pass from Panarin to tip in for the goal.

Chris Kreider hit off another power play at 3:49 of the third period, he scored off a shot from Panarin that he tipped in for the 2-1 lead.

Panarin potted his marker at 6:09, scoring off a perfect set up pass from Alexis Lafreniere for an even easier tap it in and a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Montreal dropped to 29-36-12.

In the third period, Montreal looked to rally back when Alex Newhook took a breakaway  in for a score to make it 32 to the Rangers. He scored at 12:13.

Zibanejad collected his double at 16:56 to push the Rangers’ advantage to 4-2. The goal resulted from a turnover in the neutral zone by the Habs.Jimmy Vesey set up Zibanejad at the left post for a poke in.

Lafreniere iced the game when he hit an empty net 18:45 for the 5-2 final count on the scoreboard. Panarin set him up with the pass.

Cayden Primeau made 41 saves in the loss, and stymied the Rangers early on until they geared up their power play.
