In New York, Jimmy Vesey batted in his own rebound with 4:15 left on the game clock Wednesday night to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead they would hold for the win over the Detroit Red Wings.
“I’m not going to lie, I didn’t want to look at the replay,” Vesey said. “But my initial reaction was that it was good.”
The goal capped a two-goal third that had the Rangers rally from a 2-1 deficit after two periods.
Igor Shesterkin made 25 saves in the win.
The Rangers improved to 16-4-1.
Detroit had taken a 2-1 lead in the middle frame on two goals in a span of 23 seconds.
Moritz Seider scored off the power play at 8:43 of the middle frame to tie the game, 1-1. He scored off a shot from the blue line.
Robby Fabbri scored 23 seconds later from the right circle for a 2-1 lead to the Red Wings.
Artemi Panarin had given the Ranges a 1-0 lead at 4:37 off a nifty pass from l Alexis Lafrenière, who had two assists on the night.
“It was definitely a team win,” Vesey said.
Detroit dropped to 11-7-3.
“Unacceptable to not come away with at least one point,” Fabbri said. “We were in it. We had the lead for a while. We were playing our game that we played for the last handful of games. We fell asleep there for a couple minutes and that’s the result.”
K’Andre Miller tied the game, 2-2, near the midway point of the third period on a slap shot from the top of the left circle.
The goal came off a pass from Mika Zibanejad on the left boards to Miller pinching down.
“It was unreal, unreal,” Miller said of Zibanejad’s play. “That was awesome.”
The Rangers had 19 shots on goal in the third period.
“That’s going to happen during an 82-game season, you’re going to have a couple off games, a couple off days,” Miller said. “The biggest thing with this group is realizing that we have a really good team and we have a good structure. When everything is going we’re usually winning those games. So it’s sticking to what we’re doing when we’re winning those games and trying to play a full 60.”
Ville Husso made 38 saves in the loss.
“At the end of the day wins feel better,” said Fabbri.
