NEW YORK – After getting scored on twice in the first period, the New York Rangers rallied with a strong effort to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-2. Henrik Lundqvist made just 16 saves on 18 shots but recorded his 24th win of the year, while Minnesota net minder Devin Dubnyk made 26 of 29 saves. Chris Kreider got an empty net goal to give the Rangers the two-goal lead.
Despite controlling most of the 5-on-5 game, New York found themselves in a 2-0 hole when Ryan Carter and Matt Dumba both netted goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. From that point on it was all Rangers.
Center Derick Brassard noted the tilt of momentum when they were “behind the net, cycling. That’s where we took over the game.” Ryan McDonagh, J.T Miller, Brassard and Kreider all scored for New York. Miller now has eight goals in eight games.
The goal ahead goal by Brassard came at the 5:46 mark of the third period, off a brilliant forecheck by Jesper Fast.
“At first I thought he was going to pokecheck me,” Brassard said. “He’s pretty big and I was not facing him so I was pretty surprised I had time to make a move on him. But if you look at the replay, Jesper doesn’t get any assist, but he’s the first guy on the forecheck in the corner. I love playing with this guy. He’s doing everything right. He’s a big part of our line.”
New York’s next game will be a Metropolitan tilt in Philadelphia against the red-hot Flyers on Saturday at 1pm.
The Wild will take on the Blues in St. Louis tomorrow at 8pm.
