In New York, the Rangers have a motto “No Quit in New York”, maybe they should add, ‘the game always starts on time’.
IN yet another slow start, the Rangers fell behind 2-0 in the first period to the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday, and then 3-0 early in the third.
Martin Jones made 43 saves for the Flyers, and was solid through through two plus periods of play, but the Rangers woke up and rallied for three goals to tie the game, 3-3, and force extra time.
Lucky for the Flyers, Kevin Hayes scored the only marker in the skills competition to rescue them for a 4-3 win.
“It was a good point, no doubt,” New York coach Gerard Gallant said. “Being down 3-0 … to battle back to get that point, it’s a big point. That’s what we talked about, stay with it.”
The Rangers dropped to 44-20-6, but did push closer to the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. They are two points clear of the third spot in the division.
“He played great,” Hayes said of Jones. “I’m sure he wasn’t happy with the way we played at the end there. (I) thought we kind of sat back and let them just pepper him with shots and he was the main reason why we won.”
Cam York and Owen Tippett scored to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead early in the ga,me.
“I thought ‘Tipp’ was, I don’t know if it was the best game he’s played for us, but probably had to be up there,” Philadelphia coach Mike Yeo said. “The number of quality scoring chances he had, obviously, he had the big goal for us, and I liked his play away from the puck as well.”
“We had some good chances in the second period, a lot of good chances that didn’t go in the net and their goalie played really well,” Gallant said. “He made some real key saves and then in the third period, we finally got one and when you get one and you’re down 3-0, it gives you a lot of boost, so it set them back a bit.”
The Rangers failed to hear the opening face-off call in the third period, and Joel Farabee made them pay with a goal 44 seconds into the frame.
Artemi Panarin got the Rangers on the board in the third to start the rally.
Mika Zibanejad and Andrew Copp scored 12 seconds apart to get the game even at 3-3.
Igor Shesterkin made 23 saves in the Rangers loss.
