Rangers hold lead, down Coyotes, 4-1 Rangers hold 2-0 and 3-0 leads for a change

Well look at what happened in New York on Sunday night. The Rangers protected 2-0 and 3-0 leads in a 4-1 win over the suddenly difficult Arizona Coyotes.

Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves in the Rangers win.

The victory erased a disappointing loss in Nashville, 2-1, on Saturday to the Predators.

For all the world, it looked like the Rangers were trying to lose the game. They were outshot, 17-4, in the first period and had no legs.

Despite being outshot, the Rangers escaped the period scoreless, thanks to Shesterkin.

Barclay Goodrow and Adam Fox scored in the middle frame to get the New York offense going and some life in their legs.

New York improved to 8-6-3.

Chris Kreider pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third period. Mika Zibanejad slapped a pass that drifted high and deflected into the net off Kreider’s stick shaft.

The Coyotes got that goal back on the power play when Clayton Keller ruined the shutout bid by Shesterkin.

Arizona dropped to 6-8-1.

Ryan Carpenter replied quickly and and added some breathing room for the Rangers with his first goal for New York, for the 4-1 final.

Connor Ingram made 23 saves in the Coyotes loss.
