Rangers figure out special teams, take down Jets in Winnipeg

Rangers logo WINNIPEG – After going 0-for-6 on the power-play last game, the Rangers changed up their style and went 2-for-4 and held the Winnipeg Jets to 0-for-3. Forwards Chris Kreider and Kevin Hayes got the marks while Mark Scheifele got the lone goal for the Jets.

Hayes recorded his 11th goal of the year with 1:09 left in the game off a deflected shot from defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

Scheifele’s appearance was his first in the last four games after being injured. His tally was his 14th on the year and put him back in the top ten for goals in the NHL. He is tied for fourth with Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa.

Both goalies played strong in net for their squads as net minder  Annti Raanta recorded 17 saves on 18 shots for the win and Michael Hutchinson stopped 22 of 24.

While the game seemed even, the Rangers controlled most of the possession, something they have been struggling with in previous contests. The first period seemed to be all New York, as they generated plenty of opportunities, though they only capitalized on one.

The second period was of another beast, as it appeared the Jets seemed to have the advantage on chances and took advantage, tying the game at 9:51 of the second.

Jets forward Drew Stafford was the accuser of a high stick against defenseman Dan Girard at 17:04 in the third period, which ultimately led to the Blueshirts go ahead goal.

The Rangers currently sit in second place in the Metropolitan division with 37 points (tied with first place Pittsburgh) and a 18-9-1 record. They immediately head over to the windy city to face Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday at 8:30pm ET.

The Jets hold the last wild card spot in the Western Conference with 29 points and head to Calgary to take on the Flames on Saturday at 9pm CT.
