Rangers fail to show in dismal loss

“I don’t want to take anything away from [the Devils] because this isn’t something they just did tonight, they’ve been doing this for a while,” Rangers head coach David Quinn said. “That being said, to really get outplayed as badly as we did tonight in every capacity is alarming.”

Yeah, that’s about right.

And the question is, what are you going to do about it.

The only fortunate thing for the Rangers, after their dismal 6-4 loss, was that nearly everyone around them lost as well.

That will inevitably change and they better change with the times too.

Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac struck for two goals apiece in the Devils win.

“We want to be spoilers, and that was part of the message and motivation,” New Jersey coach Alain Nasreddine said. “It’s a rivalry game, MSG, and guys were ready. I really liked the way we skated. It shows a lot of character, back-to-back wins versus two teams that were really hot.”

Mackenzie Blackwood made 31 saves in the win.

Fredrik Claesson and John Hayden added single markers for New Jersey.

In the effort put out by the Rangers, they got “so what goals” from Mika Zibanejad, Gregg McKegg, Filip Chytil, and Tony DeAngelo.

“We made it real easy for them,” Zibanejad said. “We just didn’t have an answer. We dug ourselves a hole. Going forward, with the playoff-type of games we have in front of us, we can’t do that. … Just a bad performance overall.”

Igor Shesterkin got the start for the Rangers, but was given the hook in the second intermission; he made 18 saves and surrendered five goals.

“The goaltender was the least of our problems tonight,” Quinn said. “I don’t think we had one guy have a good night tonight.”

Henrik Lundqvist played mop up and made made five saves.

“I don’t think we were very good in the first [period],” Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. “We just weren’t playing well. We were getting beat to pucks. We were playing way too loose.”

The first period? Did you sleep through the other 40 minutes of play? Wait, what am I saying?
