In Detroit, Barclay Goodrow hit for a double on Friday night to help lead the New York Rangers to a 4-3 win over the Red Wings.
Goodrow had two goals coming into the game.
“This was fun,” Goodrow said. “Obviously, I’d like to do it more often, because it is always nice to contribute to a team win.”
Goodrow iced on the left wing of the fourth line for the Rangers, a change in pattern.
“We just wanted to give that line a different look, and they were fantastic,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said. “(Goodrow) does so much stuff for us. He’s one of our penalty killers and we’ve got one of the best penalty kills this year. He’s a face-off guy and he blocks shots.”
Jonathan Quick made 31 saves in the win..
The Rangers moved to 52-21-4 off their ninth win in 11 games.
Jimmy Vesey and Jonny Brodzinski posted two assists each in the win.
Will Cuylle scored at 5:58 of the opening stanza to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead, he scored after picking the pocket of the Red Wings’ Austin Czarnik at the top of the left circle and wristing home the puck for the lead.
Detroit responded with a goal from Andrew Copp at 7:11 to tie the game, 1-1. He scored off a backhand shot down low.
Goodrow potted his first of the game at 19:31 scoring off a rebound of a shot by Vesey.
Detroit dropped to 37-31-8 off their fifth loss in six matches.
“At this time of year, any time you drop a game, it feels like a missed opportunity,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “The hockey is hard and tight, and you have to focused on every play. We lost a couple of battles tonight, which makes this hurt even more.”
The Red wings are tied with the Washington Capitals with 82 points, both trail the Philadelphia Flyers by a single point for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.
“We got some help around the League tonight,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde. “But we’ve got to take of ourselves, and that has to start on Sunday (against the Buffalo Sabres).”
In the middle frame, the Red Wings rallied with a pair of goals to take a 3-2 lead over the Rangers.
J.T. Compher scored at 1:24 of the period to get Detroit even, 2-2, he was credited with the goal after a shot by Jeff Petry ticked off his skate toe and into the net.
Larkin pushed the Red Wings into the lead, 3-2, with a power play goal at 13:19, he scored off a big rebound of a shot by David Perron.
“They are a desperate team,” Quick said. “We know where they are in the standings, and we knew how hard they were going to come out and play.”
Goodrow collected his double 25 seconds after the Larkin goal. He scored off a rebound of shot from Vesey skating down the left side. Goodrow collected the rebound on the right side for the easy wrister.
In the third period, Chris Kreider hit off the power play midway through the period to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead they protected for the win.
Kreider potted the game-winner off a rebound of a shot by Mika Zibanejad.
“I thought things felt good in the third period,” Lalonde said. “We had some momentum, and then we put their power play out there. They cashed in.”
Alex Lyon made 34 saves in the loss.
