In New York, the Rangers carried a slim 1-0 lead over the Carolina Hurricanes into the third period on Monday night. 
They left the game with a 4-1 loss and a slim 3-2 series lead headed to Raleigh on Thursday night for Game 6.
Jacob Trouba scored a shorthanded goal in the middle frame to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
That was the full extent of the Rangers offense on the night.
Frederik Andersen made 20 saves in the win.
In the third period, it was all Hurricanes.
Jordan Staal knotted the match at 1-1 at 3:33, went down the left boards and skated around the Rangers defense for a goal.
Evgeny Kuznetsov put the Canes up, 2-1 at 6:39, scoring off a rebound.
Jordan Martinook pushed the advantage to 3-1 at 9:56m scoring off a a deflected pass.
Martin Necas hit an empty net with 3:left on the game clock for the 4-1 final count. 
Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves in the loss.
