The word you are looking for is exasperating.
One night after playing a listless affair at home, the New York Rangers went to Long Island and handed the Islanders a 4-1 loss.
Alexandar Georgiev made 31 saves in a solid win for the Rangers.
Andy Greene was the lone goal scorer for the Isles, he cut the Rangers advantage to 2-1 in the second period.
“We played really well, great hockey from the start,” Georgiev said. “Felt like a playoff kind of game. It was really fun to take part in that.”
The Rangers improved to 19-16-5.
“I liked a lot about his game,” Rangers head coach David Quinn said. “I thought ‘Georgie’ was sharp, as he usually is against the Islanders. It’s not easy to sit as long as he has and come out and play the way he did. I really liked his game.”
Alexis Lafreniere put the Rangers up, 1-0, in the second period.
“The puck just bounced on my stick, so I just had to put it in,” Lafreniere said. “They did really good work and I was in the right spot at the right time and lucky it went in.”
Colin Blackwell scored his 12th of the season for the Rangers for a 2-0 lead.
“It comes with opportunity and you’ve got to make the most of it,” Blackwell said. “I was waiting for my chance. For me, I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary, just going to the right places and getting rewarded for it. The guys around me are making me a better player.”
K’Andre Miller put a shot in from the blue line for a 3-1 lead.
“It was fortunate, I think it went off a stick and found a way in,” Greene said. “We were trying to get back in the game at that point. We were playing pretty well after we got down 2-0. I thought we really started to skate well and play our game. Just couldn’t get the second one.”
The Isles dropped to 26-11-4
“I don’t think anyone would say that’s what we expect of ourselves,” the Islanders’ Josh Bailey said. “We certainly strive for more and we’ll look to do that on Sunday.”
Mika Zibanejad added an empty net to ice the game.
“I thought it was a true team effort from our goalie, from our ‘D’ to our forwards,” Quinn said. “I thought everybody did what they needed to do. Obviously, a huge win for us.”
Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves in the loss.
“We’re just off a little bit and that’s fine,” Islanders head coach Barry Trotz said. “It’s part of this long season that you’re not always going to be at your best every night. Not the result that we wanted, obviously, but hopefully we regroup and Sunday we go from there.”
