The New York Rangers won a period of hockey on Friday night in Raleigh. They won the third period, 2-1.
The problem is they were woeful in the first two periods of play, losing them by a 5-1 aggregate.
You cannot win much silverware in any league playing pieces of games.
The Carolina Hurricanes downed the Rangers, 6-3, and really was not even that close.
The Canes took a 2-0 lead in the first period off goals from Vincent Trocheck and Seth Jarvis.
It was ex-Ranger night with Jesper Fast and Tony DeAngelo scoring goals against New York.
“It was nice to put on that kind of performance,” DeAngelo said. “I thought our team played great. It was a battle for first place (in the Metropolitan Division). We got right back to where we want to be, and we’ve got some games in hand (four).”
Frederik Andersen made 20 saves in the Canes win.
“It’s a game I’ve been looking forward to, even though it’s been almost a year and a half since I was there,” Fast said. “It was a fun game to play and a great game for us.”
Mika Zibanejad, Gregg McKegg, and Chris Kreider were the Rangers strikers.
“They got the power-play goal with the screen and deflection in front, and we didn’t react good to it,” Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said. “We get dominated probably the next 10 to 12 minutes for sure.”
New York dropped to 26-11-4.
“I don’t feel like we got up to the level we needed to,” Zibanejad said. “[That’s] maybe the best team we’ve played. They took advantage of the things we did wrong and our mistakes. It’s a good learning lesson for us.”
No kidding.
Sebastian Aho and Nino Niederreiter also scored for the Canes.
Alexandar Georgiev made 29 saves in the loss.
