OKLAHOMA CITY — Rocco Grimaldi scored twice and Sam Brittain made 24 saves in his third AHL start to lead the San Antonio Rampage (44-21-5-1) to a 4-1 win over the Oklahoma City Barons (38-25-5-3) in front of 1,942 at the Cox Convention Center on Tuesday night. With four tallies on the night, the Rampage’s brought their season total to 238, tying a franchise record for goals in a season.
The Rampage move into sole possession of second place in the Western Conference, just one point behind the Utica Comets. San Antonio’s magic number to clinch the West Division is three.
Kyle Rau scored his second goal in as many games to give the Rampage a 1-0 lead late in the first period. With the secondary assist, Mike Matheson picked up his first professional point since making his AHL debut against the Adirondack Flames on April 4, along with Rau.
Rocco Grimaldi gave the Rampage a 2-0 lead in the second period, taking a pass from Connor Brickley in transition and putting a wrist shot over the shoulder of Laurent Brossoit. Just 1:46 later, Grimaldi scored again, this time on the power play, to put the Rampage up 3-0. Once again Brickley picked up the assist, moving up to fifth among the league’s rookies with 45 points.
At the 17:26 mark, Wade Megan scored his sixth of the season and fifth in his last 11 games to give the Rampage a 4-0 lead and notch the team’s 238th goal of the season, tying a franchise high for goals in a season.
A Brad Hunt goal just 57 seconds into the third period put the Barons on the board, but neither team would find the back of the net for the remainder of the stanza, giving San Antonio the 4-1 win.
The Rampage finished 1-for-5 on the power play while holding the Barons scoreless on four opportunities with the man advantage.
