PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Rampage sweep set from Checkers

CHARLOTTE, NC  – The San Antonio Rampage (22-21-7-0) swept a two-game series against the Charlotte Checkers with a 3-2 victory in front of 4,512 in Bojanles’ Coliseum Wednesday night. Mikko Rantanen recorded a goal and an assist, earning him the First Star of the Game. The rookie sensation continued to shine, finishing with four total PHN_BSOG-200x133points in the two-game series. Marc-Andre Cliché earned the Second Star of the Game with the game-winning goal early in the second period. The Rampage are now 2-1-0-0 on the 2016 Rodeo Road Trip and have outscored opponents 11-8.

The Checkers started the scoring in the first period when Sergey Tolchinsky finished an easy look from Brody Sutter. San Antonio had an unfortunate bounce off the board, and the puck wound up in Charlotte’s possession directly in front of the net. The Rampage answered just over three minutes later when Rantanen picked up a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it passed Drew MacIntyre. MacIntyre made the initial save off of a Sam Henley blast, but couldn’t control the rebound as the Silver and Black tied the game at one. One minute later, Charlotte connected on a series of passes to put the Checkers back on top 2-1. Like MacIntyre, Roman Will made the initial save but left a free-floating puck at the feet of Brock McGinn who registered his 13th goal of the season. San Antonio didn’t trail for long, as Joey Hishon tipped in a rocket from Maxim Noreau, who stood at the point during the Rampage power play. Noreau’s helper moved him up to second in scoring by a defenseman in the AHL. Both teams were held scoreless for the remaining 8:56 and went into the first intermission tied at two.

In the sixth minute of the second perioIMG_0002_0136_edited-2-1-520 IMG_0004_0138_edited-1-520 IMG_0005_0139_edited-1-520 IMG_0009_0143_edited-1-1-520 IMG_0010_0144_edited-1-520 IMG_0013_0147_edited-1-1-520 IMG_0015_0149_edited-1-520 IMG_0016_0150_edited-1-520 IMG_0027_0161_edited-1-520 IMG_0029_0164_edited-1-520 IMG_0032_0166_edited-1-520 IMG_0040_0174_edited-1-1-520 IMG_0057_0189_edited-1-520 IMG_0062_0194_edited-1-520 IMG_0067_0199_edited-1-520 IMG_0072_0204_edited-1-520 IMG_0074_0206_edited-1-520 IMG_0161_0106_edited-1-520 IMG_0163_0107_edited-1-520 IMG_0178_0122_edited-1-520d, the Rampage took the lead for the first time in the game when Cliché found the back of the net, his sixth goal of the season. San Antonio held onto a 3-2 lead through the remainder of regulation to complete the two-game series sweep.

Roman Will finished with 21 saves on 23 shots, and limited the Checkers to only one goal on four power-play opportunities. The Rampage followed suit as they potted one power play goal of their own on four chances with the man advantage.
