Rampage fall to Condors, 3-2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif  – The San Antonio Rampage (23-24-8-0) dropped a Tuesday night tilt to the Bakersfield Condors (24-20-2-2) 3-2 in front of 3,465 in Rabobank Arena. San Antonio had multiple opportunities late in the third period to tie the game, but couldn’t convert, losing to the Condors for the first time this season. Mikko Rantanen recorded one goal and four shots on the night, earning him the Third Star of the Game.

San Antonio began the scoring in the sixth minute when Rantanen collected his own 5019_bakersfield_condors_-primary-2016rebound off of Bakersfield’s Laurent Brossoit and finished the puck into the open net. With the Rampage leading 1-0, the Condors got a power-play opportunity at the 14:54 mark due to a Nick Drazenovic tripping infraction, and Brad Hunt capitalized, sending a one-timer past Reto Berra to tie the game at one. Bakersfield had a stroke of luck two minutes later when Andrew Miller shot the puck on goal and the rebound bounced off a Rampage skate and into the back of the net. The Condors took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission and outshot the Silver and Black 13-7 in the opening frame.

Despite only recording five total shots in the second period, the Rampage tied the game at two off an early goal from Dan Maggio, whose first of the season came off a nifty backhand when the puck came free in front of the Condors’ net. The remainder of the second stanza would go scoreless with the teams tied at two heading into the break.

Bakersfield landed the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of the third period when Matthew Ford found a loose puck in front of the net and snuck it past Berra.

Berra finished the night with 35 saves on 38 shots and held the Condors’ power-play unit to 1-for-5. The Rampage failed to convert their only opportunity with the man advantage.
