Raiders add defensman

ROMFORD,U.K- The English Premier league Romford Raiders have today announced the signing of defenseman Andy Munroe. Munroe, 26, is an English defenseman who joins the Raiders from last season’s treble-winning Peterborough Phantoms. Having been a part of the Peterborough set-up since 2004, making over 250 appearances for the Phantoms the blueliner is looking for a new challenge following Phantoms clean-sweep of trophies.
Munroe is strong and committed, while being very reliable in the defensive zone. He is not afraid to get in the way of shots and put his body on the line for his team, and is capable of laying some big hits. Raiders coach, Jesse Hammill spoke of his new signing: “As soon as I found out that Munsy was available I made it a priority to show my interest in bringing him into the team. Andy will add a wealth of experience and leadership to the team and is the archetypal ‘stay at home defenseman’. He makes very few mistakes and has put his body on the line for every team that he has played for,” Hammil said  “As our first new signing I am over the moon to have Andy Munroe joining the “new look” Raiders, helping us to have a successful season.” Munroe is Romford’s fourth signing of the off signing, following the return of Danny Marshall, Scott Mckenzie and Darren Cotton. On joining the Raiders, Munroe commented; “I’m really excited at the prospect of playing for the Raiders. They have always been a tough team to play against and I’m hoping that I can come and help build on the success that the team enjoyed for the second half of last season,” Munroe said
“I have great respect for Jesse having played both with and against him for Peterborough and Hull. I have been impressed by the energy and desire shown to ensure the Raiders continued to play EPL hockey and we will hopefully be able to repay that faith by producing a season the fans can be proud of,” Munroe added.
Romford have also confirmed the departure of popular youngster Billy Phillips. At last season’s awards evening, Phillips was announced to be returning to the Raiders, however the uncertainty surrounding the team a few weeks ago lead to the defenseman accepting a contract with the Slough Jets.
A Romford spokesman explained; “Billy had a great season for us last year. Unfortunately that very small gap between owners, and the uncertainty therein, was just enough for Billy to be snapped up elsewhere. Both parties are devastated about the timing, but Billy feels he was sufficiently committed to his new team that a return to his first choice was not possible,”
“We genuinely wish him well, and Billy has been left in no doubt that if things don’t work out, then the team on his doorstep may still be an option. However, it is something we have been aware of for a little while and our plans have progressed and the recruiting continues as will be evident over the coming days.” Contact the author at Dave.lambert@prohockeynews.com
