Quick makes 42 saves in LA win over Oilers Oilers home streak ends at seven games

In Edmonton Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Kings got a 42-save effort from Jonathan Quick and scored four goals in the middle frame to defeat the Oilers, 5-2.

Dustin Brown, Trevor Lewis, Dwight King, Michael Mersch (his first NHL goal), and Tyler Toffoli scored for the Kings.

“We gave up a lot more than we normally do or would like to, that’s for sure,” Brown said. “Quick had to be really good for us to get a lead and maintain a lead. It’s good that we got five [goals] and we’re finding ways to score goals, but what makes us a good team is taking care of our own end and we could have been a lot better in that tonight. We were a little sloppy in our coverage and they have some pretty dynamic players skill-wise. Either way, we have to be better in our end going forward.”

“It’s been a long process to get back and the boys have been doing really well without me, so it’s good to see and to come back to a win, it’s a good feeling,” King said. “This is really my first injury, the training staff had me keeping in really good shape and I had about two solid weeks of ice [time] before this, so it’s a process.

“It was a pretty sloppy first for our team; they came out with a lot of speed and a lot of chances and [Quick] held us in and we just capitalized on our chances in the second and rode it out a little bit in the third.”

Benoit Pouliot and Mark Letestu scored for the Oilers.

“It’s a good win for our team,” Kings coach Daryl Sutter said. “It’s a tough back-to-back coming in.”

The Oilers’ Cam Talbot was pulled in the second period after yielding three goals on 14 shots.

“There were just too many breakdowns in the second period,” Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. “They are a team that we know can capitalize on them and that’s exactly the game that they like to play. They look for other teams to give them opportunities, and that’s what we did. We showed a little bit of push-back in the third, but it wasn’t enough to tie it up.”

Anders Nilsson finished the game for the Oilers in net.

“I liked the way we were playing. Things were going pretty well for us, we were doing a lot of things we wanted to do against a real good team,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “And in a matter of a minute and a half, the bottom falls out on us for a number of reasons. That was disappointing.”
