Quick be nimble in shutout of Canes Quick earsn 58th career shutout

In Raleigh, Jonathan Quick continued his hot start with the Vegas \Golden Knights on Saturday.

Quick made 33 saves in a 4+0 shutout of the Hurricanes.

“They compete, they find ways to win,” Quick said. “It’s a fun team to play behind.”

Jonathan Marchessault scored in the fist period to give Quick all the offense he would need for the win, and a 1-0 lead.

“I think (Quick) is building confidence in his game,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I love what he’s brought so far. He’s out there playing pucks, making it a little easier on the defense. He controls rebounds well.”

Vegas improved to 40-20-6.

“They had a strong first period, but I thought we kept a lot of their chances to the outside,” Marchessault said. “Obviously Quick was unbelievable tonight and we were able to get him the shutout, and that’s something our team should be really proud to do for him.”

Reilly Smith scored in the middle frame to extend the Vegas lead to 2-0.

The Hurricanes dropped to 43-13-8, and saw the end of their four-game win streak.

“You’ve got to give their team credit,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “They played a real good, solid game. Their goalie was the difference. He’s been a champ his whole career. He’s got that in him. Unfortunately, it was against us.”

Paul Cotter scored off a 3-on-1 jail break for Vegas in the third period to extend the advantage to 3-0.

“We try not to change our style of play,” Cassidy said. “I think it’s, most nights, goaltender-friendly the way we try to defend. We value that part of the game. The more big saves he makes, the easier it is for everyone to relax if you make a mistake. It’s been a good marriage for everyone so far.”

Brett Howden added a late empty-net goal for the 4-0 final.

Frederik Andersen made 20 saves in the loss.

“There were enough chances to win the game, so you can’t put the blame on that,” Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal said. “And of course their goalie played well.”
