ROCKFORD, Ill. – John Quenneville netted the overtime winner for Rockford IceHogs on Blackhawks Night to lift them over the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 at the BMO Harris Bank Center on Friday night.
With 3:46 remaining in the extra period, Lucas Carlsson avoided a check and broke into the right side of San Antonio’s zone on a 2-on-1 with Quenneville. Carlsson perfectly thread a pass between two Rampage sticks and onto Quenneville’s stick, who one-touched the puck past a sliding Adam Wilcox and into the cage to deliver the IceHogs a 3-2 win and the second point in the standings.
After a goalless first frame, San Antonio’s Klim Kostin opened scoring just 53 seconds into the frame. However, Rockford answered nearly 18 minutes later when Alexandre Fortin jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and darted down the ice on a shorthanded breakaway. In all alone with the goaltender, Fortin faked to his backhand before pulling the puck back to his forehand and tucking home the tying tally to make it 1-1 before the second intermission.
Then, after Collin Delia stonewalled the Rampage on a breakaway, Nicolas Beaudin delivered the IceHogs their first lead of the evening 13:50 into the third stanza when Dylan McLaughlin skated loops around the Rampage zone before finding his target in Beaudin, who entered the zone late and uncovered. Beaudin caught the pass and blistered a wrister over the Wilcox’s glove hand to give Rockford the 2-1 advantage.
With exactly five minutes remaining in regulation, though, San Antonio evened up the score once more when Austin Poganski found twine to make it two apiece and force overtime.
Delia turned away 22 of 24 shots to earn the win while Wilcox stopped 18 of 21 in the losing effort.
