QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. —Winning in overtime the night before in Shawinigan Quebec did it again this time against the Gatineau Olympiques winning 5-4 in overtime for second consecutive nights. If defenseman Benjamin Gagne played the hero the night before against the Cataractes, this time it was center Jesse Sutton who scored his 15th of the year at 2:21 of the fourth period playing three-on-three.
In an offensive first period in Gatineau seven goals were scored on a total of 18 shots. Quebec breaks the ice 1:32 into the opening period beating Tristan Berube over left shoulder.
Gatineau tied the score 1:32 later on Quebec defensive turnover. Losing the puck in slot Quebec defenseman saw Gatineau right winger Samuel Hatto surprised Quebec goaltender Antoine Samuel over his left shoulder.
Andrew Coxhead gave the lead to visitor with his first of two goals in the initial period. With Olivier Garneau missing shot hit the board before coming right back on Coxhead stick wristing a shot beating Berube at 5:04.
Quebec took a two-goal lead scoring third goal in the game on their first chance with a man up. Quebec defenseman Benjamin Gagne long shot was partially block by Berube’s glove but unable to keep puck in his glove, the puck slowly crossed the line 1:50 later.
Allowing three goals in first four shots he face Gatineau head coach Eric Landry pulled his starting netminder Berube sending young 17-year old Creed Jones.
Dawson Theede cut Quebec lead to only one goal. Theede put the puck behind Quebec netminder at 11:55.
Quebec replied scoring their fourth goal, the second in the first period by 17-year old Coxhead beating Jones under left arm at 12:47.
Gatineau scored last goal in first period bringing the Olympiques to only one goal deficit as Antoine Beauchand get great pass from Mikhail Shestopalov at 16:59. Quebec netminder Samuel allowed three goals on five shots.
After scoreless second period only one goal was scored in the third period and it came from Gatineau tying the score 4-4. Shawn Boudrias’s shot seem to have eyes since the redirection by Gabrial Bilodeau beat Quebec goalie Samuel between his pads with 8:45 remaining. The goal was scored as both teams played four-on-four.
Going in overtime for the 16th time Quebec showed a record of 10-3-2. Having won in overtime the night before in Shawinigan also in overtime registering their 10th wins as defenseman Benjamin Gagne had played the hero, this time it was Jesse Sutton who beat Creed Jones in a two-on-one breakaway with Olivier Garneau. Seeing his first shot blocked by Jones, Sutton took his own rebound to beat Gatineau netminder with a backhand shot 2:21 into the overtime.
Quebec will ends their three games in five nights visiting Baie-Comeau on Saturday night.
Three other games were on QMJHL schedule on Wednesday night.
