QUEBEC CITY , P.Q. — After winning in a shootout Saturday night against Shawinigan, Quebec played their next two games on the road. In the only game on schedule in the QMJHL on Tuesday night, the Remparts went to Shawinigan to play the Cataractes in le centre Bionest. Finding themselves on the losing end Saturday after totally dominating the third period, the Cataractes expected a different outcome in front of their fans facing Quebec for second time in last three days. Eric Veilleux’s team took their revenge with 4-3 wins in front of 3,508 fans at home. On Wednesday night, Patrick Roy’s team traveled to Gatineau facing the Olympiques in Robert Guertin arena. The Remparts returned home with 4-1 win over the Olympiques.
Mikhail Grigorenko (1-1) and Frederick Roy (1-1) were the best Quebec players offensively. Michael Chaput (1-2) and Kirill Kabanov played key role in Shawinigan victory.
Quebec was the first team to get on the scoreboard with Michael McNamee’s sixth of the year at 11:52. But before coming back to their locker room Shawinigan tied the game at one with a Pierre-Olivier Morin goal. Morin only had to push the puck in an open net after being left alone on Louis Domingue’s left side at 17:26.
Winning a battle along the board Quebec right winger Raphael Corriveau made a great pass to Grigorenko who took his own rebound for Quebec’s only goal in second period at 6:11.
Leading by one when the teams came back on the ice for the third period, Quebec got on board scoring their third goal of the game with only 2:50 gone. Taking advantage of a mistake by Cataractes center Chaput, Quebec right winger Grigorenko made perfect pass to teammates Roy scoring Quebec third goal taking a two goals lead for first time in the game.
Winds seemed to turn in Shawinigan’s favor with the first goal of the night by Kirrill Kabanov reducing Quebec lead to only one goal with 6:50 gone in the third. Kabanov came right back less than three minutes later (9:12) with Shawinigan tying goal.
Seeing his pass intercepted by Grigorenko on Quebec third goal scored by Roy, Michael Chaput picked up a pass from defenseman Martin Lefebvre beating Quebec goaltender Domingue on a breakaway for the game winning goal at 12:11.
With 2:04 left in the game Quebec head coach Patrick Roy pulled his goaltender in an attempt to see his team get the tying goal but it didn’t happened. Shawinigan won 4-3.
On Wednesday, three goals in the first period by Michael McNamee on 15 shots by Quebec, Adam Erne with three assists and goaltender Francois Brassard with 34 saves on Gatineau 35 shots played key roles leading Quebec to a solid performance in Robert Guertin arena.
McNamee beat Olympiques goaltender with a backhand that went over Francois Lacerte right shoulder for his first goal of the night at 7:33 of the opening period. Center’s second goal came less than two minutes later with 9:01 gone in the period. The Perth Ontario native completed his hat trick with 24.7 seconds remaining in first period.
Already 0-for-4 with a man advantage Gatineau’s only goal in the game came during a penalty to Quebec rookie Anthony Duclair for a check to the head.
Defenseman Adam Janosik saw his shot beat Brassard at 17:33 of second period. Knowing they saw their opponent dominate them in the third period in their last three games, winning only one game in shootout in Quebec against Shawinigan, they surely didn’t want to see the same scenario repeat.
Leading by two after forty minutes, Quebec added a fourth goal with only 1:02 gone in third period. Grigorenko beat Gatineau netminder with a backhand shot following great pass his third in the game by another promising rookie Adam Erne.
Quebec next game will be this Friday when they will host the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.
Two other games were on schedule on Wednesday.
PEI 2 vs. Drummondville 4
Saint John 3 vs. Rimouski 4
