Quebec bounce back winning against Cape Breton at home Sergeev and Gagne end game with two goals each

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. —Coming back from Abitibi with only one point of a possible four, Quebec bounced back in front of their fans scoring five goals in span of 6:10 in second period leading them to 6-2 wins against Cape Breton. Aleksei Sergeev and defenseman and captain Benjamin Gagne led Remparts offense for their fifth win of regular season.

“That completely changed the game, five goals scored in second period is something very hard to come back from for any teams in the league.” Quebec captain and defenseman Benjamin Gagne.“We continued on, we didn’t let them having any chance to come from behind. We just play our kind of game,” continued the veteran defenseman when asked if something has been said in the locker room between the first and second periods.

“In first period we weren’t as intense as we would like to be, we didn’t won battle one-on-one, coming back to the base coming back to our real identity that is what it worked.”

“We just talked, we didn’t change anything,” answered Quebec head coach Patrick Roy when asked what has been said between the first and seconds period to see his team scoring five goals in span of 6:10 seconds.

“First of all, when you came back from long road trip like the one we did in Abitibi, the first game back always is the toughest one, we expected the first period to be a bit harder, the fact we didn’t go out the way we wanted, we would like to be the kind of team that respect our identity, using our speed, we would like to put pressure on their defensemen with great for-checking, that was the way we scored several of our goals in second periods,” continued Remparts head coach Roy.“We put lots of shot on net, it wasn’t their number one goaltender so we would like to test him and gave us the chance to score goal, and so that was what the guys did.”

Cape Breton opened the scoring as the first penalty to Quebec Remparts forward Olivier Mathieu penalty ended.

Making the save on first shot by Cape Breton right winger Mitchell Balmas, unable to control the rebound, Quebec goaltender Dereck Baribeau, saw Balmas teammate Igor Sokolov, taking the rebound scoring his sixth goal of the regular season at 17:4141.

Quebec tied the score in the middle frame at even strength. Alexksei Sergeev shot beat Sreaming Eagles goaltender William Grimard on his left side at 5:49. Louis-Filip Cote and Philip Kurashev.

Quebec took the lead for first time in the game 1:58 later on second goal of the night by Sergeev. Allowing three goals on 13 shots Cape Breton head coach Marc-Andre Dumont decided to pull his starting netminder sending in Kevin Mondolese.

Screaming Eagles new metminder Mondolese has been welcomed by first goal by Quebec captain defenseman Benjamin Gagne scoring his first of the year, first of two goals in the game, in second periods as he beat Mandolese over his left shoulder with a long wrist shot with 8:31 left in the middle frame.

Quebec captain Gagne came back 30 seconds later with his second of the game seeing his shot deflected against Screaming Eagles players before beating Mandolese for a second times over his left shoulder at 11:59.

Trailing by four visiting head coach decided to pull his netminder with less than 14:00 to play in third period showing confidence in his players to get something going. Playing six-on-five Cape Breton scores later in the period as Leon Gawanke beat Quebec goaltender over his left shoulder at 16:19.

Quebec sealed visiting team faith of any possible return as Brandon Frattoreli beat Cape Breton netminder between his pads for Quebec sixth goal during their second power play opportunities in the game at 18:47.“Overall, we played a good game, answered Cape Breton head coach Marc-Andre Dumont. “ We made mental concentration mistakes in second periods that were costly for us. It is the history of our sequence, we could play very good hockey for very long minutes, but we do mistakes that will get in the net. On our evaluation we did, they scored four goals on first five good scoring opportunities in second periods, they were very opportunistic. These were quality chances, we just have to work harder.” Continues Screaming Eagles head coach Dumont.

Quebec will return in action on Friday still playing in Videotron center hosting the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
