QMJHL returns to action

QUEBEC CITY P.Q. — Sunday marked the return to action in the QMJHL. Seven games were on schedule.
 
Saint John 5 vs. Acadie Bathurst 4: The Sea Dogs scored five goals on 46 shots on Bathurst goaltender Guillaume Nadeau who left for the bench at 18:20 for an extra attacker. Saint John opened the scoring late in first period when Tomas Jurco beat Nadeau at 15:00. First period ended with 12 shots on net for both sides. Saint John came out in second period dominating 25-7 on shots on goal, scoring three times allowing two to their opponent.
 
Mike Hoffman, with first two goals (0:51) the second one on the power play at 2:37, gave a 3-0 lead to the visitors before the Titan got on the board with two goals, cutting the Sea Dogs’ lead to only one. Jess Tanguy (4:16) and Jeremie Malouin (10:41) replied for Bathurst. But before the siren sound announced the end of the period Tomas Jurco also with his second of the game gave Saint John a 4-2 lead at 14:02.
 
Saint John defenseman Simon Despre (2009 Pittsburgh first round selection) scored what became the game winning goal at 4:28 of third period. Bathurst registered two more goals Jonathan Lessard and Taylor Lambke but it wasn’t enough. Saint John won 5-4. Marc-Antoine Gelinas (21-5-0) made 27 saves out of 31 shots on goal for Saint John. Guillaume Nadeau made 41 saves on 46 shots.
 
PEI 0 vs. Cape Breton 3:   The Screaming Eagles took serious option on the game taking a 2-0 lead after the opening period. Two goals scored by Stephen Horyl first one (8:47), second one on a power play at 13:58. Jean-Sebastien Fournier scored Cape Breton’s third and last goal in the game for Mario Durocher’s team. Oliver Roy (15-12-0) got the shutout for Cape Breton while Marco Cousineau (10-14-0) made 27 saves on 30 shots.
 
Moncton 10 vs. Halifax 1: All goals in the game were scored at even strength. The Wildcats scored five goals in the opening period, leading 5-0 after twenty minutes. Nicholas Deschamps, formerly with Chicoutimi, and Daniel Pettersson with two goals each were the offensive leaders for Moncton. Marek Hrivik Scott Trask, Alex Saulmier, Mark Barbiero, David Savard and Devon MacAusland scored other Wldcats goals in that game.
 
Grant Gerrard on a penalty shot was the only one to beat Moncton goaltender Nicola Riopel, his first game with the team, following his return to the league from a minor professional stint. Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault gave five goals on 23 shots before Joel Grondin came in the game in the second period allowing five goals on 17 shots.
 
Chicoutimi 1 vs. Quebec 10: Jonathan-Audy Marshessault, Dmitry Kugryshev and Danick Hudon-Paquette with two goals each were the offensive leaders when Quebec trounced the Sagueneens in front of 13,899 fans. Kelsey Tessier, Frederick Roy Mikael Tam and Samuel Groulx completed the scoring for Quebec. Alexandre Roy was the lone scorer for Richard Martel team. The Remparts scored five of their ten goals on six power plays opportunities. Christopher Gibson who came back from Finland the night before allowed seven goals on 23 shots before being replaced by Francis Desrosier at 7:35 of third period, allowing Quebec last three goals in the game.
 
Val-d’Or 3 vs. Rouyn-Noranda 6: Three goals were scored in the opening period two by the Huskies giving a one goal lead to Rouyn-Noranda after one. Gabriel O’Connor (10:24) and Jean-Sebastien Berube (18:25) scored for the Huskies, Shawn Morton-Boutin scored Foreurs only goal in first twenty minutes. Four goals were scored in second two by each team.
 
Jonathan Hazen tied the score at two at 3:37. The Huskies regained the one goal lead 3-2 when Philippe Cornet scored his 20th of the season at 14:59, but Vincent Couture tied the game at three for Val-d’Or less than a minute later at 15:55. Rouyn-Noranda regained the lead for second times in the period 4-3 on Jeff Desjardin goal at 17:00. The Huskies add two more goals in third period Alexandre Beauregard and Christophe Losier completed the scoring for the Rouyn-Noranda 6-3 victory over Val-d’Or Foreurs.
 
Gatineau 5 vs. Shawinigan 7: Offensively led by Pierre-Alexandre Vandal (2-1) the Cataractes won an important game against the Olympiques. Alexandre Quesnel found Adam Janosik for his fifth of the year giving 1-0 lead to Gatineau. Shawinigan tied the game at one when Michael Bournival beat Maxime Clermont at 14:07 of the opening period. The Olympiques regained the lead with 49 seconds left in the first period on goal by defenseman Hubert Labrie. Olivier Croteau gave the two-goal lead to the visitor with his fifth of the regular season at 3:21 of the second period.
 
The Cataractes came back with next three goals in the game inside next six minutes. Jean-Philippe Foucher (10:50), Pierre-Alexandre Vandall (14:45) and Etienne St. Germain (15:34) gave to Shawinigan the lead for first time in the game 4-3. But before the second period ended, Alexandre Quesnel and Christian Ouellet with Gatineau fifth goals in the game, gave one goal lead to the Olympiques 5-4 after forty minutes.
 
Shawinigan adds three more goals in third period to ensure the victory. Olivier Ouellet on power play (7:16), Pierre-Alexandre Vandall (his second of the game) (10:31) and Tommy Tremblay completed the scoring for the Cataractes leading them to 7-5 win.
 
Lewiston 4 vs. Victoriaville 3: A surprising victory by the MAINEiacs in le Colisee Desjardin of Victoriaville. Lewiston scored two of their four goals with a man advantage in four attempts. The Tigres scored only one in seven power plays. After a scoreless first period, the MAINEiacs opened the scoring with Etienne Brodeur 10th of the season at 2:08. Victoriaville didn’t waste any time to reply; in fact it took only 38 second before Brandon Hynes got the Tigres on the scoreboard with first Victoriaville goal.
 
Lewiston regained the lead 4:02 second later when defenseman Samuel Finn scored his first of the year. Olivier Hinse tied the score 2-2 for Victoriaville at 10:43 of the second period. Lewiston scored next two goals with the help of their power play. Billy Lacasse at 1:06 to begin the third period gave 3-2 lead to the visitor. Stefan Fournier completed great play by Pierre-Olivier Morin giving a 4-2 lead to the MAINEiacs. Guillaume Goulet completed the scoring for Victoriaville on a power play at 15:23 of the third period but it was too late for the home team losing 4-3.
