San Jose, CA –Forward Teddy Purcell scored a goal and two assists and forward T.J. Hensick added three assists to propel the Ontario Reign (13-6-5-0) over the San Jose Barracuda (11-6-1-3) 4-3 in overtime at SAP Center Sunday afternoon. Goalie Jack Campbell made 40 saves for his 10th win of the season.
The Reign raced out to an early 1-0 lead as forward Teddy Purcell slipped a shot between the legs of Barracuda netminder Troy Grosenick (OTL, 29 saves on 33 shots) to snap his three-game shutout streak at 6:32. After a lengthy review before confirming the Purcell marker, the Barracuda turned the momentum around and grabbed back-to-back power-play tallies to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. Defenseman Joakim Ryan snuck a shot past Campbell from the right-wing point at 9:47 and forward Adam Helewka picked up his fifth goal of the season at 17:27.
Early in the second period, Reign forward Adrian Kempe reset the contest with his fifth goal of the season after following up on a Justin Auger rebound at 5:25. With less than five minutes left in the period, team captain Vincent LoVerde would be flagged for a major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing and the Barracuda would go 3-for-3 on the man advantage as Helewka buried his second goal of the game at 16:19.
Fighting back in the third period, the Reign made it 3-3 late when forward Brett Sutter smacked a rebound over the blocker of Grosenick at 16:46. In the extra session, forward Michael Mersch completed the comeback for the Reign on the power play at 1:07. The Reign finished the contest 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
