Providence knock off the top team in the east

Providence, RI- The Providence Bruins stormed into the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The hottest goalie in the AHL Zane McIntyre started in net for the Bruins, opposed by Casey DeSmith for the Penguins. The Bruins looked to continue their hot streak and tie the Penguins going into their final game of 2016.

Justin Hickman opened the scoring just 5:41 into the first on a goal set up by Zac Rinaldo and Sean Kuraly. The Bruins continued to press the Penguins attempting to add to their lead. Casey DeSmith was forced to make some outstanding saves in the early going, just to keep the Penguins in the game. Jake Guentzel took a slashing penalty that put the Bruins on the power play.

Colby Cave made the Penguins pay scoring on the powerplay, assisted by Jake DeBrusk and Alex Grant. The Bruins struggled after adding to their lead, getting hemmed in their own zone by the Penguins. Josh Archibald cut the Bruins lead in half scoring on a feed from Oskar Sundqvist.

Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first period, with both Goalies being forced to make crucial stops. The first period ended with the Bruins leading 2-1, and the shots tied at 12. Rob O’Gara started the second period off in a huge way scoring just 19 seconds in, assisted by Chris Porter and Tyler Randell.

The Penguins continued to push the Bruins, but McIntyre stood tall in net like he has all season. Danton Heinen was sent to the box for a high-sticking double minor, putting the Bruins down a man for four minutes. Zac Rinaldo added to the Bruins lead on a short-handed goal, assisted by Tommy Cross.

The Penguins continued to pressure the Bruins as they still had 2:01 left to kill on the double minor. Zane McIntyre was forced to stand on his head at points to keep the Bruins up by three goals. Peter Cehlarik added to the Bruins lead late in the second on a goal, assisted by Colby Cave and Danton Heinen.

The second period ended with the Bruins leading 5-1 and the shots 23 to 22 in favor of the Penguins. Both teams continued to go back and forth throughout the third period, as the Bruins tried to maintain their massive lead over the Penguins. Each team locked down the neutral zone forcing minimal chances at their other end.

Oskar Sundqvist scored for the Penguins, assisted by Jake Guentzal and Tim Erixon. But it was to little too late as the Bruin skated to 5-2 win over the Penguins. The final shot count was 31 to 24 in favor of the Penguins.

The third star was Oskar Sundqvist for the Penguins, who had a goal and an assist in the losing effort. The second star was Zac Rinaldo for the Bruins, he scored a goal and had an assist for the Bruins in the win. Tonight’s first star was Colby Cave, who also had a goal and an assist for the Bruins in the win.

The Bruins will take on the Hershey Bears in their final game of 2016 on Saturday night, at the Giant Center in Hershey Pennsylvania.
