Providence Friars skate to a tie with the Boston College Eagles

On Saturday night the defending the National Champion Providence College Friars took on the Boston College Eagles at Schneider Arena. The Friars looked to avenge their 7-4 loss to the Eagles on Friday night at Conti Forum. Nick Ellis started in net for the Friars opposed by Ian Milosz for the Eagles.

Providence FriarsThe two teams went back and forth early in the first period, but the most they could muster were perimeter shots. The Friars took the puck on a fast break up the ice, and the puck appeared to go in. Upon further review the goal was disallowed due to goalie interference.

A few minutes later Josh Monk put the Friars down a man, when he took a tripping penalty. BC scored on the ensuing power play off a rocket from Ian McCoshen, Austin Cangelosi and Casey Fitzgerald were given the assists on the goal. The Friars seemed to have scored again, but this time the goal was disallowed for the net being moved.

After that, the Friars took over dominating the Eagle in every zone. Chris Calnan put the Eagles down a man when he went off for a hooking minor. The Friars were able to take advantage off a goal from Erik Foley, assisted by Tom Parisi and Brian Pinho.

Providence continued to pound away at the Eagle, but the score stayed tied due to the play of Milosz. As the period was winding down the Friars struck again, this time it was Nick Saracen assisted by Pinho and Jake Walman. The Friars struck again only seconds later off a John Gilmour goal, assisted by Parisi and Brandon Tanev.

The first period ended with the Friars leading 3-1 and shots 22 to 7 for the Friars. The Friars came back out for the second period looking to extend their lead over BC. Providence continued their dominance over BC in the early stages of the first.

The Friars continued to hem the Eagles in their own zone forcing Milosz to make some of his best saves of the game. The Friars pushed their lead to three when  Trevor Mingoia scored, Mark Jankowski got the assist.

The Eagles started to take some of the momentum back from the Friars as they started peppering Ellis with shots. But the Friars defense and Ellis wouldn’t break under all the pressure. BC finally solved Ellis when Teddy Doherty fired one past him, Fitzgerald and Steve Santini got the assists.

The Friars went back on the penalty kill when Vincent Desharnais went off hooking. The Eagles scored on the ensuing power play when Alex Tuch slipped it past Ellis to cut the lead to one. Doherty got the only assist on the goal for the Eagles.

They continued to go back and forth the momentum changing multiple times. The second period ended with the Friars leading 4-3 and the shots 32 to 19 for the Friars. The third period started with the Friars looking regain the momentum that they had lost to the Eagles.

But the Eagles tied the game off a Chris Calnan goal, Austin Cangelosi and Steve Santini got the assists. They continued to battle back forth, but neither goalie gave up an inch. The frustration began to show late in the third period as the game started to get more chippy.

With both goalies stoning each teams best chances, the third period ended in a tie. the score was 4-4 and the shots 41 to 33 for the Friars. Both teams were looking to end the game as overtime started.

BC was all over the Friars early, but Ellis kept the Friars in the game. They went back and forth, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The game ended in a tie 4-4 with the final shots 43 to 34 for the Friars.

The Frairs will look to get back to their winning ways when they take on Vermont on Friday January 19th in Burlington.
