NASHVILLE – Nearly twenty-five years ago, Nashville showed up on the NHL’s radar, this after years of being home to mediocre minor league clubs on the periphery of low-level hockey. Flash forward and in that time, the city was awarded an expansion franchise in 1997, hosted an All-Star Game in 2016, came within a few wins of a Stanley Cup in 2017 and now another distinction, hosting one of the league’s top events next year.
The Music City will host an outdoor hockey game known as the 2022 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series. It will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 PM Eastern time and will be televised by new television partner TNT.
The game will be played at Nissan Stadium home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans and their opponent will the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. It is another honor justly awarded to Smashville, a hockey experience which has evolved into one of the best in all of pro hockey.
Lightning defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Victor Hedman, who flew to Nashville after their 4-1 home loss to the Florida Panthers the night before, joined Predators defensemen Roman Josi and Mattias Ekholm to represent their teams at the kick-off event.
As part of the comments at today’s press conference, representing the host Titans, Team President Burke Nihill termed the event “Smashville Spectacular”, something that might gain traction in the coming months. Josi meanwhile remarked on his home base that “Nobody throws a party like Nashville.”
Also of note, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the game will be played following a full week of activities, the details of which will be announced at a later date.
