Poor start costs Ducks in Tampa Ducks yield top spot to Nashville

In Tampa, the Lightning used a three-goal first period en route to building a 5-1 lead as they defeated the Anaheim Ducks 5-3 Sunday.

The Bolts did to the Ducks what the Los Angeles Kings did to them Saturday.

“We weren’t happy with [Saturday] and against a good team [Sunday] we played a good game,” Lightning goalie Ben Bishop said. “It was a good start after what happened Saturday.”TampaLogo2

Bishop had been pulled in the game against the Kings but was back in the crease Sunday.

It was a disappointing start for the Ducks who had visions of repeating what the Kings had accomplished.

“Obviously we had our eyes on the game last night,” Ducks center Kyle Palmieri said. “We saw that [Los Angeles] got a 3-0 lead and we saw these guys battle back. We knew what we needed to do in the first period and we just didn’t do it.”

Frederik Andersen was the victim of five goals but left the game after the goal fell on him in the third period.

“I talked with [Andersen] and it doesn’t appear to be anything too serious,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “It was a bit of a scare.”

Brian Boyle scored twice and the Bolts got goals from Valtteri Filppula, Nikita Kucherov and Ryan Callahan.

On a positive not for Anaheim, Ryan Getzlaf returned to play and picked up his 200th career NHL goal.

Sami Vatanen and Eric Brewer added goals in the losing effort and the Ducks now trail the Nashville Predators in the western conference by a point.
