Players signed to professional tryouts for training camps

Unsigned veteran players can earn a contract with an NHL team by impressing enough in training camp on a professional tryout contract (PTO).

Training camps will open Dec. 31 for the seven teams that did not participate in the NHL Return to Play Plan for the 2019-20 season. Camps will open for the remaining 24 teams Jan. 3, and the regular season will begin Jan. 13.

The following notable players (listed alphabetically) will be in an NHL camp on a PTO with the listed team:

Craig Anderson, G, Washington Capitals

The 39-year-old goalie was 11-17-2 with a 3.25 goals-against average and .902 save percentage for the Ottawa Senators last season, his 17th in the NHL. He is 289-251-67 and two ties in 648 NHL games (633 starts) with 2.84 GAA, .914 save percentage and 42 shutouts for the Senators, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks. The Capitals are seeking a veteran backup for 23-year-old Ilya Samsonov after Henrik Lundqvist, who signed a one-year contract Oct. 9, said he won’t play this season because of a heart condition.

Kevin Connauton, D, Florida Panthers

Connauton did not have a point in four games for the Colorado Avalanche last season and scored 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 38 games for the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League. The 30-year-old defenseman has scored 76 points (27 goals, 49 assists) in 314 NHL games for the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes and Avalanche. His best offensive season came with Arizona in 2017-18, when he scored NHL career highs in goals (11) and points (21).Michael Del Zotto, D, Columbus Blue Jackets

Del Zotto scored 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in 49 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season. Selected by the New York Rangers with the No. 20 pick in the 2008 NHL Draft, the 30-year-old defenseman has scored 236 points (56 goals, 180 assists) in 657 NHL games for the Rangers, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Ducks.

Mike Hoffman, F, St. Louis Blues

The 30-year-old forward scored 59 points (29 goals, 30 assists) in 69 games for the Florida Panthers last season and five points (three goals, two assists) in four Stanley Cup Playoff games. Hoffman has scored at least 22 goals in each of the past six NHL seasons and at least 56 points in each of the past five.

Jordan Nolan, F, Pittsburgh Penguins

The 31-year-old forward scored 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 60 games for San Antonio of the American Hockey League last season. Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round (No. 185) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Nolan has scored 52 points (24 goals, 28 assists) in 375 NHL games for the Kings, Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues. He’s scored two points (one goal, one assist) in 30 Stanley Cup Playoff games, and helped the Kings win the Cup in 2012 and 2014. Nolan last played in the NHL in 2018-19, when he had two assists in 14 games with the Blues.

Riley Sheahan, F, Buffalo Sabres

The 29-year-old forward scored 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 66 games for the Edmonton Oilers last season and no points in four Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (No. 21) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Sheahan has scored 164 points (66 goals, 98 assists) in 513 regular-season games for the Oilers, Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Red Wings and seven points (three goals, four assists) in 33 playoff games.Devin Shore, F, Edmonton Oilers

The 26-year-old forward scored 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 45 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Anaheim Ducks last season, including two points (one goal, one assist) in six games after he was traded to Columbus on Feb. 24. He didn’t score a point in two Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Dallas Stars in the second round (No. 61) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Shore has scored 106 points (39 goals, 67 assists) in 288 regular-season games for the Blue Jackets, Ducks and Stars.

Garret Sparks, G, Calgary Flames

The 27-year-old goalie played one game for Orlando of the ECHL this season, making 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory at Wheeling on Dec. 19. Sparks made 12 saves for the Vegas Golden Knights in relief of Marc-Andre Fleury during a 6-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 25, 2019, his lone NHL game last season. He was 8-14-4 with a 2.75 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and two shutouts in 26 games for Chicago of the American Hockey League.

Sparks was traded to Vegas by the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 23, 2019 after two seasons in Toronto, where he was 14-18-2 with a 3.09 GAA, .898 save percentage and two shutouts in 37 games (34 starts). He was chosen by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round (No. 190) of the 2011 NHL Draft.
