GLENS FALLS, NY. – The Colorado Eagles went 4-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill, while forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel registered his first hat trick as an Eagle in a 6-2 win over Adirondack on Saturday. Seven different Eagles registered multi-point nights and goaltender Clarke Saunders stopped 40 of the 42 shots thrown his way.
Colorado put a season-high 20 shots on goal in the first period, but Thunder goalie Tom McCollum would stop all 20, while Saunders made 11 saves on the 11 shots he faced in the first.
The Eagles would begin the second period by killing off a 5-on-3 Thunder power play, before eventually creating their first power play opportunity of the contest. Forward Josh Nicholls would pounce on the man-advantage when he stuffed in a loose puck on top of the crease to give Colorado a 1-0 lead with only 3:11 gone in the middle frame.
The power play would continue to thrive for Colorado, as less than five minutes after Nicholls put the Eagles on the board, forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel would turn a hard working effort in front of the net into his seventh goal of the season, extending Colorado’s lead to 2-0.
Adirondack would finally break through at the 11:23 mark of the second period when forward Dennis Kravchenko laced a wrister into the back of the net to slice Colorado’s advantage to 2-1.
The Eagles would pump their lead back to 3-1 when a beautiful series of passes in transition culminated with forward Matt Garbowsky feeding fellow forward Jesse Mychan with a cross-slot pass that Mychan would bang home to give Colorado a 3-1 lead with 6:50 remaining in the second period.
Heading into the third period, Colorado would stay on the attack, as Pierro-Zabotel again fired a rebound in the low-slot into the back of the net on the power play to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage just 2:08 into the period.
The Thunder would continue to battle, as forward Peter MacArthur snapped a wrist shot that lit the lamp at the 3:20 mark, cutting Colorado’s lead to 4-2. That edge would be extended to 5-2 when forward Luke Salazar rifled home a shot from the left circle on the power play with 13:08 remaining in regulation.
Adirondack would pull McCollum in favor of the extra attacker, but it would be the Eagles who would score, as Pierro-Zabotel backhanded the puck from the red line into the cage to give Colorado the 6-2 lead with just 3:04 left in the third and securing the Eagles win.
The Eagles kick-off a three-game set against the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday, December 7th at 7:05pm MT.
