PENSACOLA, Fla. (Nov. 23, 2016) – Scoring from a familiar face as well as a new face and a strong performance between the pipes powered the Pensacola Ice Flyers (3-4-3) to a 2-1 win over the Mississippi RiverKings (7-4-0) on Wednesday night, Thanksgiving Eve, inside the Pensacola Bay Center.
The Ice Flyers struck first with a beautiful power play goal. Brandon Lubin stopped a Mississippi clearing attempt and fed the puck to Nick McParland below the right wing faceoff circle. McParland immediately fired it past RiverKings goalie Peter Di Salvo for the 1-0 lead with 8:04 left in the first period.
The Ice Flyers went up 2-0 when Patrick Megannety scored his first goal of the season. He fired a shot from right along the right wing boards and Di Salvo couldn’t control the rebound as the puck bounced off him a couple times before eventually making it into the net. Louis Belisle had the only assist on the goal that came 5:42 into the middle frame.
Mississippi took advantage of a late power plat to cut the Ice Flyers’ lead down to 2-1 when Mike Moran scored with 4:10 remaining in the third. The RiverKings were unable to even the score despite another late power play and pulling Di Salvo for the extra skater after that.
Matt Zenzola stopped 28 of Mississippi’s 29 shots on goal and improved his record to 2-1-2 on the season.
