PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Wild night in Sheffield ends with 6-5 Steelers win

What a game, what a night, what a story.

An hour and 15 minute delay to face off due to a power-cut at the arena – 6 times the Steelers led, 5 times the Blaze came back in front of over 6,473 fans.

Steelers fans queued outside the arena in freezing temperatures after the power supply faulted and staff worked incredibly hard to ensure the game went ahead. Twice referee Tom Perring almost called the game off due to fears of player safety but somehow the maintenance staff ensured sufficient lighting for the game to go ahead.

What a start for the Steelers, with Ashley Tait off on a delay of the game minor Levi Nelson opened the scoring on the power-play at 1.33 (assisted Valdix and Bjorklund)

Nelson would leave the game shortly after after receiving a match penalty for checking to the head.

Jace Coyle doubled the Steelers advantage at 11.21 (assisted Fretter and Valdix)

The Blaze came out firing on all cylinders at the start of the second period. First TJ Syner broke away just 21 seconds in to fire past Mustukovs (2-1)

Then a scramble in front of Mustukovs led to Almedia tying the game at 25.17 – it was the first sign of the barn burner that was to come.

Before the period ended the Steelers had edged in front once more. Armstrong the scorer, Dowd and Roy picking up assists on the 2nd power-play goal of the night. Steelers led 3-2.

Desbiens was called for high sticks at 38.58 his reaction earn’t him another 2 minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Blaze power-play went to work.

The first Desbiens penalty was killed but the Blaze equalised early in the third period when Marquardt scored at 42.55

Ben O’Connor on a delayed penalty goal had the Steelers 4-3 ahead at 47.07

Back came the Blaze, Robert Bergman at 48.29 to make it 4-4

Cometh the moment cometh the man of the match Ben O’Connor with his second to make it 5-4 at 50.27

Bergman scored again, a deflected shot that looped over Moose to make 5-5 with 8.21 remaining.

The clock moved into the late hours of the night with ore hockey and overtime beckoning.

Then came the game winner, down the left wing came John Armstrong and firing off his off wing he beat Brian Stewart with a sweet shot that helped lift the roof off the arena.

Armstrong assisted Dowd and O’Connor at 58.33 and a final score of Steelers 6-5 Coventry Blaze.
