BRAMPTON, ON – Zach Fucale made 34 saves but the Brampton Beast fell 2-1 in overtime against the Toledo Walleye on Friday, January 26th.
The Toledo Walleye travelled north of the border to tangle with the Brampton Beast for a Friday night showdown.
The Walleye have had the number of the Beast in recent years and the start of this game was no different. Toledo stormed into the zone off a neutral zone turnover and Kevin Tansey fired a wrist shot that eluded Beast goaltender Zach Fucale.
Toldeo has a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the game and would take that score into the first intermission. Shots after one were 10-6 in favour of the visiting Walleye.
It was night and day in the second period for the only Canadian ECHL franchise. With traffic in front of Walleye netminder Matej Machovsky, Vincent Dunn was able to bang home the rebound on the power play to tie the game 1-1 at 2:49.
Chris Leveille and Brandon MacLean picked up the assists on Dunn’s fourth of the season. The pace of play significantly picked up after the goal with both clubs trading chances back and forth.
Brampton would head into the second intermission tied 1-1 and leading in shots by a slight 20-19 count.
Despite a furious pace to the third period, neither team was able to pot the crucial insurance goal. The contest headed to overtime, with lots of ice at the disposal of both clubs.
Brampton had some excellent chances to end the game but it was not to be as Ryan Obuchowski slipped past Alex Foster and fired the winner past the glove of Fucale 2:16 into the extra frame.
Fucale was the best Beast player on the ice and finished with 34 saves.
