MOLINE, Ill. – Adam Vay made 31 saves on the way to his first career ECHL shutout and Chris Francis and Josh MacDonald delivered a goal and an assist apiece as the host Quad City Mallards (26-18-2) extended their winning streak to a season-best five games by blanking the Kalamazoo Wings (22-20-4) 4-0 Friday night.
The Mallards were on the power play when Francis opened the scoring from a tight angle at 13:13 of the first period.
The Mallards were again up a man when Justin Kovacs followed Francis’ lead by firing the puck past Wings goaltender Joel Martin from a sharp angle at 12:15 of the second period.
Just under two and half minutes later, Martin exited the game after allowing a third goal of exactly the same type- a shot from a narrow angle- to MacDonald. Nick Riopel finished the night in goal for Kalamazoo.
Jack Nevins capped off the Mallard victory by scoring an empty goal with just 22 seconds left in the third period.
Vay was at his busiest in preventing a Wings’ comeback bid by stopping 14 Kalamazoo shots in the third.
The Mallards return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Elmira Jackals on home ice. Tomorrow evening is also Princess and Pirate Night at the iWireless Center. Young fans attending the game are encouraged to dress as their favorite animated princesses or pirates. Fans can purchase four tickets for tomorrow night’s game, four princess or pirate t-shirts and four ice cream cones for just $75 by calling the Mallards’ business office at 309-277-1364.
