PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Stingrays get revenge on Icemen

JACKSONVILLE, FLA – On Saturday, May 15th, the Jacksonville Icemen went out looking for back-to-back wins against the South Carolina Stingrays. The visitors from North Charleston had other ideas as Matthew Weis and Cole Ully each scored twice to lead the Stingrays to a 4-2 win at the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena.

South Carolina opened the scoring 5:57 into the first period when Max Novak set up Ully who beat Icemen netminder Kyle Keyser for his first goal of the night and 19th of the season. The Stingrays doubled their lead a little less than four minutes later when Ully and Novak helped to create an opportunity and Weis cashed in for his 7th of the year.

Before the period ended, Jacksonville was able to get on the board. Mike Szmatula set up Nick Saracino who tallied his 16th goal of the season at the 14:17 mark of the frame. Trevor Hamilton was credited with a secondary assist on the score.

There was only one goal scored in the middle frame and it belonged to the visitors. While the Stingrays were on a power play, Ully bagged his second of the game and 20th lamp lighter with Tyler Nanne and Brett Supinski picking up the helpers. Ully’s tally sent the game to the third period with South Carolina up 3-1.

The Icemen crawled a bit closer early in the final frame. Erik Bradford beat South Carolina netminder Alex Dubeau for his 7th of the season during a Jacksonville man advantage at 6:21. The assists on the score went to Ryker Killins and Derek Lodermeier.

That was as close as Jacksonville would get. At the midpoint of the period, Weis picked up his second of the night and 8th of the year with a power play tally assisted by Nanne and Ully. Neither team scored the rest of the way and South Carolina skated off with the victory.

Dubeau picked up the win between the pipes for the Stingrays, stopping 23 of 25 Icemen shots. On the other side, Keyser made 22 saves on 26 shots faced in suffering the loss.
