A cup game that could have meant nothing and given very little ended up being a barn burner that had something fro everyone as the Steelers put 9 past the Coventry Blaze on Saturday in front of over 6,000 at the Sheffield Arena.
Steelers started Brad day in goal and gave both Liam Kirk and Cole Shudra ample ice time in a game that only the Coventry Blaze had to win (to stand a chance of progression in the Challenge Cup)
Steelers dominated the first period outscoring the Blaze 3-1
First Colton Fretter opened his account for the night after just 10.39 (assisted Dowd and Nelson)
Former Steeler Jim Jorgensen tied the game at 13.46 before Fretter scored his second 52 seconds later to make it 2-1
The scoring wasn’t over in the opening session, Mathieu Roy converting with a stunning backhand deflection from jesse Schultz at 15.03 to give the Steelers a comfortable advantage.
The Blaze cam back at the Steelers in the middle session.
Both Klotz and Liam Stewart scoring in the opening 5 minutes of the period to tie the game 3-3
Steelers then hit two of their own, Levi Nelson at 27.24 for 4-3
Then the moment of the night when Liam Kirk scored his first professional goal. A left wing shot that sent the 6,000 crowd into raptures and a standing ovation. Steelers 5-3
Marquardt scored a penalty shot goal at 33.15 (5-4) before Mike Ratchuk made it 6-4 with 20 seconds remaining in the period.
Desbiens set up Ferrara short handed for 7-4 before Schultz made it 8-4 after super work by Mathieu Roy
The scoring wasn’t over, Cantin made it 8-5 at 52.37 before Big John Armstrong scored the Steelers 9th and final goal of the night at 53.21
