SHEFFIELD, UK – The Steelers recent 9 game home winning run came to an end on Sunday as the Manchester Storm twice came back from 3 goals down to beat Sheffield 7-5 at the Fly DSA (Sheffield) Arena.
It was a tired Steelers side and one game too many in this hectic recent run of huge games.
An early 5 minute major penalty to Jay Rosehill gave the Steelers the prefect opportunity to get off to a great start in the first period and they didn’t disappoint.
The King of Sheffield, Mathieu Roy hit 2 power-play goals inside a couple of minutes for the Steelers to lead 2-0.
Jonas Westerling his a 3rd at the 10 minute mark and the Steelers were on their way.
With Andreas Valdix off for hooking the Storm found their way back into the game, Mike Hammond scoring off a shot deflected by both Mark Matheson and Joonas Ronnberg.
Storm came out the stronger at the start of the 2nd period, Andrew McKinney scoring 2 minutes in to narrow the score-line to 3-2.
32 Seconds later Jonathan Phillips had extended the lead once again.
Steelers went on the powerplay after a clash between Davey Phillips and Ciaran Long
Mathieu Roy had his hat-trick on the resulting power-play and the Steelers 3 goal lead was restored (5-2).
The Steelers then hit the wall, recent games had caught up with them and as the Storm pushed forward the Steelers looked more and more venerable.
Hammond hit his 2nd in the 26th minute and then Luke Moffat pulled it back to 5-4 with less than 5 minutes remaining in the second period.
Steelers needed a strong start to the final period but their lead lasted just 12 seconds in before Moffat hit his 2nd to level the game 5-5.
At 47.11 Moffatt completed his hat-trick to put the Storm ahead 6-5
The impressive Dane Byers then gave the Storm some security with a 7th goal with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Steelers tried hard and pushed, Valdix hit the cross bar.
A late 5 minute major penalty against Andreas Jamtin slowed if not stopped the Steelers momentum, with no further goals being scored the final result was Steelers 5-7 Manchester Storm
