SHEFFIELD, UK – The Steelers recorded their 4th straight shut out, Ervins Mustukovs extended his EIHL record for time without conceding, Fights, incidents and yes 3 Sheffield goals secured the points for Paul Thompsons side. Steelers win 3-0.
Over 7,000 were in attendance at the Fly DSA (Sheffield) Arena for the first of two New Year Battles against the Storm – every fan went home entertained but both coaches will be concerned about their roster size for when the two teams meet again on Monday.
Dops will automatically take a look at a couple of incidents that took place during the game which could see some suspensions handed out to both sides.
Steelers are already without John Armstrong with Jonas Westerling also unlikely to play in Monday’s return fixture.
Robert Dowd scored the only gosl of the first period after just 88 seconds (assisted Levi Nelson and Tim Wallace)
Manchester had good periods of possession without demanding too much from the solid and capable Mustukovs.
59 Seconds into the middle period the Steelers doubled their lead when Andreas Valdix found the back of net to make it 2-0 (assisted Dowd and Nelson)
Dowdy scored his sec0nd at 58.15 with Aarssen and Valdix assisting to make it a final score of Steelers 3-0 Manchester Storm.
The action however wasn’t over. The game had been tense and niggly from the start and finally got out of hand at the final hooter after Linden Springer had cross checked Mark Matheson head first into the boards. This was the second time of the night a Steelers had been hit this way after Colton Fretter hit by Jay Rosehill.
Tim Wallace and Springer then fought and were ejected from the game.
Steelers take the points from game 1 – a big night in Manchester ahead for both sides on New Years Day.
