SHEFFIELD, UK -Jackson Whistle made 35 saves, stopped five breakaways, had an assist of the game-tying goal and then stopped all four Dundee Stars penalty shots – it wasn’t a bad night for the Steelers man of the match on Wednesday evening.
Steelers ended up on the right side of a 3-2 penalty shot shoot out victory.
It was an edge of your seat come back for the Steelers who once again struggled to create offence in the opening two periods.
After a scoreless first it was the Stars who took the lead when Brian Hart scored at 30.48 on the power-play.
With the period coming to an end former Steelers Matt Marquardt then doubled Dundee’s advantage when he beat Whistle with just 7 seconds on the clock.
It was make or break in the third period and the Steelers delivered.
Davey Phillips took an early third period penalty but it was the Steelers who took advantage when Pitt found Owens short handed to score.
It was another tense period, the Steelers dominated the majority of the play but with Dundee looking dangerous on the break.
The huge moment came with just over 4 minutes remaining. Steelers pressed but the Stars countered on the breakaway, Jackson Whistle made a huge pad save that rebounded to Chris Lawrence.
Lawrence then went end to end and his shot deflected off Mark Matheson to tie the game 2-2
There was no further scoring in regulation and the game went into overtime with both teams securing a point.
Both teams went close in the 5 minute 3 on 3 period with no further scoring.
The Steelers then went on to win the game in the shoot out.
Chris Lawrence scored for the Steelers, Jackson Whistle made four saves of the Dundee shooters before Josh Pitt secured the points with a second shoot out goal.
Steelers win 3-2 and move into second place in Elite League standings.
