Rivermen Force Game 3 with 2-0 Win over Mayhem Friday

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen scored an early goal and held a 1-0 lead for most of the game before eventually dropping the Macon Mayhem 2-0 on Friday night. The win levels Peoria’s current playoff series with the Mayhem at 1-1 with the decisive Game 3 looming tomorrow night in Owens Center.

The Rivermen opened the scoring early in the first Peoria. At 6:04, Peoria pulled ahead when Alec Hagaman lifted a rebound over Macon goaltender Garrrett Bartus and into the Mayhem net for the 1-0 lead.

The score held at 1-0 through the end of the second period despite Peoria out-shooting the Mayhem 23-5 in the middle stanza, and Peoria doubled their lead early in the third period. At 4:30 of the third, Ben Power entered the left wing of the Macon zone, stopped to lose a Mayhem defender, and passed cross ice to a streaking Walker Wintoneak, who dunked from the right post to make it a 2-0 Peoria lead.

Kyle Rank stopped all 20 shots he faced, including eight in the third period, to earn his second professional playoff shutout. The win is Rank’s fifth all-time in 12 professional playoff appearances.

Notes: Peoria captain Dan Bremner notched an assist on Hagaman’s first-period goal, giving him his first assist since February 4 at Macon…Hagaman’s goal is his first since March 12 at Huntsville…Wintoneak’s goal is his first professional playoff tally in his second career post-season game…Rivermen center Josh Harris was denied on a penalty shot at 14:22 of the second period…Bartus has made a combined 81 saves for Macon in the first two games of the playoff series…The Rivermen and Mayhem conclude their best-of-3 series Saturday night at Peoria’s Owens Center with the decisive third game of the SPHL President’s Cup quarterfinal playoff series with a 7:35 central time start The broadcast of the game can be heard, starting with the pregame show, at 7:15.
