PHILADELPHIA – With the All Star break behind them, the Flyers were looking to gain a little momentum off the rest and start the second half of the season fresh.
On Tuesday night, they got what they wanted with a 4-3 shootout win over the Arizona Coyotes.
Steve Mason did not start the game but came in as relief of Ray Emery with just six minutes gone in the match.
Emery had given up two goals to the Coyotes to put the Flyers in a hole.
Wayne Simmonds scored the only goal in the skills competition to give the Flyers the win.
“I think that was more indicative of the team than Ray,” Simmonds said of the change in net. “More of a wake-up call for us. We were sleeping on our feet there. We pulled it around, we started playing better hockey and we got results.”
It was a big two points for a team in need of some positive movement.
“We have what, 33 games left now?” Philly’s RJ Umberger said. “There’s no time to not be ready. Every point matters right now. That was the message to get going. Mason answered the bell. He lifted the team. He made some big saves when he got in there.”
