
HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Pensacola Ice Flyers were firing on all cylinders against the Huntsville Havoc, and when the final buzzer sounded Ice Flyers emerged with a 4-1 win.
Huntsville was stymied by Pensacola’s netminder John McLean, who stopped 30 shots during the victory. McLean certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.32 entering the contest.
The Ice Flyers were sparked by Adam Pawlick, who registered one goal. Pawlick scored on the power play 2:48 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Pensacola. Pensacola had taken the advantage when the Havoc’s Dave Williams got sent off for hooking. Cole Ruwe picked up the assist.
The Ice Flyers were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and two majors for 24 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Pensacola had been spending in the box. The Ice Flyers did not challenge the opposing goalie, firing only 14 shots on net to force 10 saves. The shot total fell below Pensacola’s season average of 25.6 shots per game. The Ice Flyers’ penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Huntsville power plays.
Pensacola also got points from Ludlow Harris, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Pensacola included Stephen Buco and Mark Rivera, who scored one goal each. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Mike Krieg and Dean Moore, who contributed one each.
Huntsville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 24 penalty minutes. The Havoc forced Pensacola goalie McLean to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.
Huntsville was led by Will Aide, who took two shots.
The Ice Flyers registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Kevin Genoe recorded 10 saves for the Havoc.
