PENSACOLA, Fla. – On Saturday, March 19 the Pensacola Ice Flyers (27-17-4) used a late goal by captain Adam Pawlick to clinch a 3-2 win over the Peoria Rivermen (34-11-3) as well as a spot in the 2016 SPHL President’s Cup Playoffs.
Peoria took the lead when Ben Power scored on a long shot that beat a screened John McLean with 2:48 left in the first period. The Ice Flyers tied the game at one when Joe Caveney flew up the right wing and fired a hard shot that beat the Rivermen’s Kyle Rank up high. Josh Cousineau and Brandon Zurn assisted on the goal 9:40 into the second.
The Ice Flyers took the lead while on a 5-on-3 power play when Stephen Buco took a pass from Mike Krieg and ripped a slapshot from the left point. The goal came with8:25 remaining in the second period and Corey Banfield had the other assist. The Rivermen managed to tie the game at two all when Steve Morra cashed in on a power play with an unassisted goal with 0.8 seconds remaining.
The entirety of the third period was scoreless before Pawlick scored with 59.5 seconds remaining. Cousineau skated up the left wing boards and found Pawlick flying down the middle. Cousineau hit Pawlick with a perfect pass and Pawlick ripped a slapshot. Steve Bergin had the other assist on the game winning goal.
McLean stopped 28 of Peoria’s 30 shots on goal. For the second night in a row, the Ice Flyers swept the Three Stars with Caveney being named third star, Buco second, and Pawlick first.
