PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Norfolk doubles up on Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, FLA – The Jacksonville Icemen took to the ice at the Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday, February 1st hoping to scuttle the hopes of the Norfolk Admirals to come away with a win. Unfortunately for the Icemen, the Admirals had plenty of ammunition as they came away with a 4-2 win.

Norfolk was led by Jake Wood who had a goal and an assist in the contest. Wood opened the scoring at the 16:45 mark of the first period off assists from Matt McMorrow and Eric Roy.

The Admirals doubled their lead 2:01 into the second frame when Jalen Smereck and Kelly Klima combined to set up Ben Duffy for a score. Jacksonville cut the lead in half midway through the frame when Cody Fowlie lit the goal light off helpers from Everett Clark and Wacey Rabbit. Norfolk quickly answered when Don Olivieri netted an unassisted goal at the 11:58 mark to give the visitors a 3-1 lead heading to the final period.

In the third, Darki Angeli scored a power play goal to push the Norfolk lead to 4-1. Assists on the man advantage tally went to Wood and T.J.Melancon. The Icemen got a goal from Kyle Shapiro off assists from David Broll and Matt Ustaski at 13:43 but it was not enough to complete the comeback.

Norfolk goalie Merrick Madsen stopped 25 shots to pick up the win while Jacksonville netminder Mikhail Berdin took the loss, making 17 saves in just over 45 minutes of play.
