ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – The U S Naval Academy Midshipmen shut out The College of New Jersey Lions on Saturday night at McMullen Arena by a score of 5-0. Navy dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting TCNJ 61-24.
Navy got off to a fast start scoring just 3:17 into the first period. Conner Hyden scored the goal with assists from Luke Turk and Alexander Vandenberg. The period saw the Lions goaltender Michael Lojewski turn away 23 shots while allowing just a single goal, while his counterpart for Navy, Luke Markus was only called on to make five saves.
The second period had more action, as Navy scored three times and the two teams combine for four minor penalties, with one of the penalties leading to a power play goal. Derek Golembrosky scored just 58 seconds into the period with assists from Joseph Giannini and Vandenberg’s second assist of the night. It was Andrew Douglas scoring at 7:06 to extend Navy’s lead with helpers from Zachary Flagler and Joe Doherty. Navy’s defense had to come up big with three penalty kills, including close to a minute of five on three. Alexander Vandenbergs third point of the night came on a power play goal at 19:44 with assists from Michael Burkard and Matthew Stamler.
The final goal of the game was scored at 10:40 of the third on Andrew Douglas second goal of the game. Matthew Stamler got his second assist of the night while Joseph Kelly also contributed an assist on the goal.
Navy continues their homestand with a game versus the University of Delaware on Friday, October 19. The College of New Jersey heads to Princeton University for a game on Saturday, October 20.
