ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – United States Midshipmen had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-3 win over the M1 Drexel University Dragons.
Christopher Day had two goals and one assist to lead the Naval Academy. Day scored the first of his two goals at 14:23 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Gil Givens assisted on the tally. Day’s next tally made the score 3-1 with 18:55 left in the second period. Matthew Harrigan picked up the assist.
Drexel University’s power play was ineffective against the Midshipmen’s penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.
Midshipmen excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Midshipmen bested their season scoring average. This season, Midshipmen have averaged 3.6 goals per contest. The Midshipmen’s defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.
The Naval Academy also got points from Cole Maetzold, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Harrigan, who also registered one goal and one assist. Midshipmen also had goals scored by Trent Lulow and Tommy Sears, who each put in one. In addition, The Naval Academy received assists from Nicholas Mantz, Luke Turk, and Stephen Sabatini, who contributed one each.
The Dragons’ penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Midshipmen power plays.
Drexel was helped by Christopher Rodrigue, who tallied one goal. Rodrigue scored 6:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Drexel. Ryan Williams assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Drexel included Vincent Ferraro and Adam Ferreira, who scored one goal each. More assists for Drexel came via Carson Newton and Dylan Hart, who each chipped in one.
The Naval Academy ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Dragons incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
