ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Two early power-play goals and a shutout performance by freshman netminder Hayden Lavigne propelled the University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 4-0 upset win over No. 4 Boston University on Friday night (Nov. 11) at Yost Ice Arena.
Lavigne kept the Wolverines in the game by stopping all 30 shots he faced, including 15 in a fast-paced second period.
“I’m pleased with the way all of our goalies have played,” said head coach Red Berenson. “Hayden put his stamp on the fact that he is the real deal as a freshman netminder with his performance tonight.”
The difference maker in the game was special teams, where U-M scored twice on the power play and killed all six penalties faced.
Michigan scored six seconds into its first man-advantage, as freshman forward Will Lockwood shot the puck around a screen and over Jake Oettinger’s blocker-side shoulder at the halfway point of the first period.
Just 37 seconds later, U-M added another power-play score, as junior winger Dexter Dancs fed the puck into the slot, where classmate Tony Calderone one-timed it through the far side of the net.
Freshman forward Jake Slaker gave U-M a three-goal lead early in the third period, taking Lockwood’s pass across the crease and knocking it into the open net for his fourth goal of the season.
Calderone added an empty-netter with 4:35 remaining in the contest to notch his first multi-goal game of the season and seal the victory for Michigan.
With the win, Michigan improves to 16-12-0 against Boston University and keeps a perfect 6-0 record against the Terriers at Yost Ice Arena.
