MOLINE, Ill. – Sam Warning provided the clinching shootout goal after also scoring in the third period as the host Quad City Mallards (9-6-1) defeated the Indy Fuel (8-6-2) 4-3 in a shootout Friday night.
Warning and Alex Petan scored in the shootout for the Mallards while C.J. Motte- who made 28 saves in regulation and overtime- denied both Indy shootout chances.
It briefly appeared as if Warning might have scored the deciding goal in regulation when he buried a centering pass from Chris Francis to snap a 2-2 tie one minute into the third period. However, the Fuel evened the score just over four minutes later when a centering feed from Alex Wideman- who finished the game with a goal and two assists- caromed home off Indy’s Kevin Lynch.
It was the Mallards who had twice battled from behind in the second period. After Matt Rupert gave the Fuel a 1-0 lead with a wrist shot from the slot at 3:59 of the second, Michael Parks deadlocked the contest by pouncing on a rebound at the 16:46 mark. The Fuel moved right back on top when Wideman flipped in a rebound with just one minutes and 13 seconds left in the period, but only 10.2 second before the horn Jack Nevins- jumping on yet another rebound- replied for the Mallards.
The Mallards return to action on the road tomorrow night against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night, December 7 against the Kalamazoo Wings. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games this season face off at the special early start time of 6:35.
