JACKSONVILLE, FLA – Given the fact that the Florida Everblades are usually a formidable force, beating them can sometimes be looked at as a job for a superhero. On Saturday, November 3rd at the Veterans Memorial Arena, the Jacksonville Icemen found their superhero in Cam Maclise, who scored twice including the game winner in a 4-3 overtime win.
Just as they had on Friday, Florida opened the scoring in the first period. Derek Sheppard did the honors, beating Jacksonville goalie Tanner Jaillet 6:26 into the contest during an Everblades power play.
The Icemen struck back for the next two scores. Maclise netted his first of the night at the 9:32 mark when he zipped a shot past Florida netminder Jeremy Helvig. Maclise then drew a primary assist by setting up Grant Cockerill for a rebound tally to put the home team up 2-1.
The Everblades returned the favor when Matt Finn scored a power play goal with 45 seconds left before the first intermission. Then just over two minutes into the second frame, John McCarron redirected a shot by Zach Nastasiuk home to give Florida a 3-2 lead.
Less than three minutes went by before Jacksonville connected to tie the score. Jake Randolph was in the right place to jam home a rebound past Helvig to pull the Icemen even at 3-3, which is where the score stayed through the rest of the middle frame and the third period as well.
In the overtime, a long period of puck possession in the Florida end led to Kris Newbury finding Maclise driving for the net. Newbury’s pass was true and Maclise did not miss, sending the Marvel Comics Superhero weekend home crowd into celebration.
Jaillet made 23 saves to earn the victory in net for Jacksonville.
