JACKSONVILLE, FLA – The matchup of the two top teams in the Eastern Conference did not disappoint. A physical first period left both teams scoreless, but the Icemen turned on the offense in the second, snapping the Growlers’ eight-game win streak. Kris Newbury recorded a goal for the second game in a row on the way to a 2-0 win and the first pro shutout for Mikhail Berdin.
Following a scoreless first period, Newbury netted the eventual game-winning goal at the 4:57 mark of the second frame. The assists on the score went to Maxime Fortier and Sam Vigneault. Late in the period, the Icemen picked up an insurance tally when Newbury and Dajon Mongo combined to set up Fortier.
From there is was up to the defense to help Berdin get that first shutout. The Growlers had two opportunities on the power play but Berdin was rock solid, making the bulk of his nine third period saves with his team down a man.
