MELBOURNE, Australia – This past weekend the Melbourne Ice hosted the Newcastle Northstars in a doubleheader.
Saturday’s match featured a wild affair between the two clubs that was much closer
than the 7-4 outcome in favor of the Ice.
The game entered the third frame with the Ice leading 4-2 but the Northstars rallied to tighten the game and only a pair of special teams goals as time wound down gave the Ice the breathing room they needed.
Cassian Delsar scored an empty net goal on a penalty kill with two minutes left in regulation.
Mathew Lindsaythen scored a power play goal less than 30 seconds later to end the scoring.
Charles Smart took the loss for Newcastle on 32 saves while Dayne Davis made 18 saves to get the win for Melbourne.
On Sunday, the third period was once again the difference maker when the Ice posted two goals in the final frame to give the Ice a 4-1 win.
Niklas Dahlbergscored his second of the game at 15:52 to make the score 3-1 in favor of Melbourne.
Viktor Gibbs Sjödinscored an empty netter with under two minutes left in regulation to seal the win.
Melbourne Ice had their opportunities on Sunday and were not able to capitalize on those opportunities that were presented to them.
Nicholas Mizentook the loss for the Northstars on 25 saves.
Dayne Davismade 24 saves for Melbourne to earn the win.
The Ice continue to hold the top rung of the AIHL ladder with 56 points through 22 games. They lead second place Perth Thunder by 11 points.
